Every school day matters—especially in kindergarten through 2nd grade. These early years are when children build the foundational skills and habits that set them up for success not only this year, but throughout their entire school journey.
Building Strong Foundations Early
In K–2, students are learning how to:
- Recognize letters and sounds
- Learn to read and write
- Understand numbers and problem-solve
- Follow routines, work with others, and persist through challenges
When students miss school, they miss direct instruction and practice that cannot be fully replaced. Even missing just two days a month (about 18 days a year) can add up quickly and put students at risk of falling behind. Attendance and Reading Go Hand in Hand
Strong attendance in the early grades is closely tied to reading success:
-
Kindergarten and 1st-grade students who are chronically absent are far less likely to read on grade level by 3rd grade. [attendanceworks.org]
- One major study found that only 17% of students who were chronically absent in both kindergarten and first grade were reading proficiently in 3rd grade, compared to 64% of students with good attendance. [attendanceworks.org]
- Children who are chronically absent in the early grades have an 81% chance of reading below grade level by 3rd grade.
Learning to read is the foundation for learning everything else. When students are present every day, they are far more likely to develop confidence and strong literacy skills.
Attendance Builds Lifelong Habits
Just as important as academics, daily attendance helps children build habits that last:
- Responsibility and routine
- Perseverance
- Positive relationships with teachers and classmates
These habits start early. Research shows that kindergarten attendance patterns often predict attendance in later grades. [attendanceworks.org]
How We Can Work Together
We know that absences sometimes happen due to illness or family circumstances. When challenges arise, please reach out—we are here to help. Together, we can:
- Address barriers early
- Support healthy routines
- Make school a welcoming, safe place every day
Your partnership makes a powerful difference. By helping your child attend school regularly, you are giving them one of the greatest gifts: a strong start and a successful future.
Thank you for your continued support and commitment to your child’s education.
Go Panthers!
With gratitude,
Mrs. Amelia Edd

We want to take a moment to thank our incredible classified staff and share with families just how important they are to our school community. The week of March 2-5 is the week we honor our classified staff. Classified staff assistants, secretaries, custodians, IT techs, maintenance, cafeteria workers, and bus drivers.
From the moment students arrive until the last bell rings, our classified staff keep our school safe, welcoming, and running smoothly. They support students in classrooms, serve nutritious meals, keep our buildings clean and ready for learning, help students get to and from school safely, and provide care, kindness, and consistency every single day.
Often working behind the scenes, their dedication makes a visible difference. Our students thrive because of the relationships, support, and care our classified staff provide. They are truly the heart of our school, and we are deeply grateful for all they do for our students, families, and staff.
Please join us in thanking our classified staff for the vital role they play in helping our school succeed!

Hello Eastside parents,
My name is Tobias Robinson, and I’m a resident of Bandon. I’m a transplant from Philadelphia, PA, the greatest sports city in the world! My love for the Oregon coast and small communities led me here over a decade ago. My experience as a student-athlete and my educational background in physical education, kinesiology, and exercise science have fueled my passion for human movement and performance.
I’ve had the privilege of working in physical education from kindergarten to the geriatric population, at local elementary schools to the local community college, in both the educational and athletic settings. Currently, I coach youth football and youth track and high school track and field in Bandon, and have been a substitute teacher in the Coos Bay School District for the past two years.
I’m thrilled about the opportunity to finish out the school year as your PE teacher at Eastside. You can expect a high-energy and motivated teacher to teach and inform our students of the benefits of physical activity, the different variations of sport and physical activities, and the safety considerations when engaging in and preparing for activity. This month, our physical education class will focus on foot skills. Over the next few weeks, I’ll introduce foot skills and movement concepts commonly associated with sports like soccer. We’ll emphasize passing, kicking, foot dribbling, and trapping (receiving) as the primary skills. However, we’ll also incorporate other skills and useful information into our games and lessons to enhance the learning experience.
Our recess games are structured activities that we introduce to our students to enhance the PE learning experience, as well as equip our students with productive skill-developing activities that complement our class skill emphasis. This month, our recess games will consist of:
Soccer red light, green light
Kick and Chase Race
Soccer Bowling
Each game will consist of the use of the skills of ball control, hand-eye coordination, force production, and body control. The teaching cues I will use will be eyes alert, eyes up, quick looks, inside-outside taps, and trap (receiving a soccer) pass. The academic language and word use will consist of dribble, ball control, force, fast, slow, safety, and spatial awareness. I look forward to finishing the year strong with the incredible Eastside staff and your remarkable Eastside students.
Go Panthers,
Coach T

This month, our Character Strong character trait is honesty. We are teaching students what honesty means and how we tell the truth in all we say and do. Below is a link to our Honesty Song, which we teach students in class.
