Hello Eastside Families,
How can we already be in February? These past three weeks have brought quite a bit of sickness, so I want to take a moment to remind everyone of the current guidance about when students should stay home and when they are healthy enough to return to school.
When is it okay to come to school with a cold?
If your child has mild cold symptoms—such as a runny nose, a slight cough, or mild congestion—and they are feeling well enough to attend school, it is usually okay for them to attend.
When should your child stay home?
Please keep your child home if they have:
- A fever (100.4°F or higher)
- Vomited or had diarrhea
- Severe cough, body aches, extreme fatigue, or is clearly not feeling well enough to learn
As a reminder of our district policy, students must be:
- Fever-free for 24 hours without medication, and
- Vomit-free for 24 hours
- before returning to school.
If your child has a fever, please do not give fever-reducing medication and then send them to school. While medication can temporarily lower a fever, it does not stop the illness. When children come to school while sick, it often leads to the illness spreading to classmates and staff—and can result in your child needing to be sent home anyway.
Attendance is vital to helping our students meet grade-level expectations by the end of the school year. We have mostly completed our benchmark testing, and I’m excited to share preliminary results. A few students who have been ill still need to complete their assessments, but the graphs below show our students’ progress compared to the beginning of the school year.
Our end-of-year goals are:
- 75% of our students will be regular attenders with 90% or better attendance
- 80% of our students will be at or above grade-level on DIBELS, our foundational reading measure by the end of the year
- 87% of our students will score at or above grade level on the Savvas end-of-year math assessment
Lastly, I am excited to announce our Family Reading Night on February 24th from 5:00–6:30 p.m. Please RSVP when the ParentSquare message is sent so we can ensure we have enough dinners for everyone attending. We will guide your family through games and skill-building activities to reinforce what your child is learning at school. We will also have fun prizes for families who join us.
Thank you for all you do to support your child’s success at school!
Go Panthers!
With gratitude,
Mrs. Amelia Edd
